PHILOSOPHY

Halberstadt is a small town in Saxony-Anhalt, near the forest and mountains of the beautiful Harz region of Germany. Artist and curator ilka Leukefeld grew up here and has been inspired by the town’s long history and a number of unusually interesting contemporary art projects already based here (including the John Cage Organ Project) to found the international biennial Monat_Kunst_Halberstadt.

The concept of Monat_Kunst_Halberstadt – Art Month Halberstadt – promises extraordinary aesthetic experiences for everyone involved. By being used for art, many areas of this ancient town are being brought into view afresh. Hidden corners and previously inaccessible spots, as well as public spaces – all become new places for art and are in turn renewed by art.

The unusual exhibition spaces offer a spectacular platform for the art works and form an assembly of art-spaces. The individual works have not been designed specifically for particular places, yet art and space enrich each other in a variety of attractive and challenging venues, as well as established exhibition spaces.

Due to the geographical distribution of the exhibits, their public visibility and their temporal dimension, the overall project Monat_Kunst_Halberstadt becomes a vibrant artistic intervention re-shaping the image of the town.

Join us at the Contemporary Menagerie of Visual Philosophers exhibition – and allow yourself be surprised.

Ansicht KURATORIN

CURATOR

“As curator of this exhibition, I aspire to offer a platform where contemporary art and visual philosophy can be linked in new ways and so continue to develop together. Through this juxtaposition, I aim to create a memorable experience for participating artists and guests.

“What am I looking for in the exhibiting artists – what excites me – is what their personal 'philosophy of life' consists of, how do they apply their philosophical knowledge, how do they experience, understand, handle and process their time and connected events?

“With Contemporary Menagerie of Visual Philosophers, I hope to initiate an exhibition that meets our essential human curiosity to discover something new, experience something new: something that triggers a shock within ourselves that releases a cognitive process and provides new stimulus. Something that leaves us shaken or amazed.”

Ilka Leukefeld has lived in London and worked between the UK and Germany as an artist for the past two decades. Since graduating from Goldsmiths College, University of London, and receiving her MA from the University of the Arts, London, she has initiated and curated many diverse art projects in both countries. She has presented her work widely, including recently in London at the Southbank Centre and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
